Hands-on Health Australia delivers the Australian Practitioners Emergency Response Program (APERN), a national initiative designed to provide immediate, high-quality physical therapy support during emergencies and natural disasters. Established in response to the 2009 Victorian Bushfires, and further mobilised during the 2019–2020 Australian Bushfire Season, APERN brings together trained practitioners to work alongside emergency services, supporting firefighters, volunteers, and affected communities in high-pressure environments.
Addressing a critical gap in emergency care, APERN focuses on therapeutic touch to treat acute musculoskeletal injuries, relieve stress and fatigue, and support emotional wellbeing during and after crisis events. By providing on-site massage and manual therapies, the program strengthens resilience, recovery, and the capacity of emergency workers to continue their vital roles. Grounded in the belief that human connection is essential in times of trauma, APERN offers a compassionate, practical response that complements existing medical and psychological support systems.
